Die eingegebenen Suchanfragen werden an mehrere Bibliothekskataloge gleichzeitig weitergereicht und die jeweiligen Trefferlisten angezeigt. Der KVK verfügt selbst über keine eigene Datenbank. Er ist von der Verfügbarkeit der Zielsysteme im Internet abhängig. Er kann auch nicht mehr Funktionalität bei der Recherche bieten als die einzelnen Zielsysteme selbst.
